A pace setting ministry for sustainable management of public works and housing infrastructure for accelerated development

Goals

The Ministry exists to formulate and implement policies, plans, programmes and projects for the sustainable management of public landed properties, coastal protection works, operational hydrology and storm water drainage systems as well as secured, safe, decent and affordable housing for all people living in the country.

Core Functions

The Ministry derives its broad functions from Section 13 of the Civil Service Act 1993 (PNDCL 327). The functions are;

(a) Initiate and formulate policies, taking into account the needs and aspirations of the people;

(b) Undertake development planning in consultation with the National Development Planning Commission; and
(c) Co-ordinate, monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of the performance of the Sector

Based on the above framework the Ministry of Works and Housing performs the following specific functions:
i. Initiate and formulate housing and works policies taking into account the needs and aspirations of the people.
ii. Collaborate with MDAs to effectively disseminate information about Government policies, programmes and activities of the sector.
iii. Coordinate, monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of the performance of the Works and Housing Sector.
iv. Provide an enabling environment to support government businesses and public private partnerships within the sector.
v. Promote innovation, research and development, training, and investment in the sector.
vi. Support creative and innovative research in the production and use of local building materials.
