Minister Inspects Projects In The Western Region 6

The Minister for Works and Housing, Honourable Samuel Atta Akyea, visited the Western Region to inspect  status of the Nkontompo,  Adwoa and Aboadze Sea Defence projects.

The Minister, who was accompanied by his two Deputy Ministers, Hon. Freda Prempeh, Hon. Eugene Boakye  Antwi and other officials  also visited Axim to inspect the effects of tidal waves along the coastline.
Addressing the media after the inspection, the Honourable Minister assured the chiefs and people of Axim that  efforts are being made by  government for the Axim coastal protection works to begin.
He acknowledged that the coastal areas in the Western Region, apart from being abound in fish stock, was also  endowed with beautiful beaches that have huge economic and tourism potential for both the country and the  people in the region.
“If we do not work on the sea defence project at Brawire and Axim, the beaches will continue to destroy  including the road infrastructure. If we secure the shore at Axim, the investment will come” he noted.
Hon. Atta Akyea was of the view that, to resolve the financing issue of the project, Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement should be adopted for contractors to pre-finance the project.
The Western Regional Minister, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, indicated that the Region has most of the country’s resources, which includes cocoa, gold and rubber. Therefore, any investment made in the region was justified.
The chiefs commended the Minister for taking keen interest in the sea erosion issue, adding that pictures of the devastating waves of the sea, over the years, had stirred in the face of the fishing communities at Axim and Brawire shores, posing a serious threat to lives and properties.
